MTTI Education for Employment

Thomas Smith

Motorcycle/Power Equipment Technician program

Thom came to MTTI after being laid off from a long-term position. “I was a longtime motorsports enthusiast,” Smith said, “and I decided to make that a career.” He enrolled in the Motorcycle and Power Equipment program.

After graduation, it took a few months, but he was hired by Home Depot in August as a tool technician in the tool rental department. Three months into his new job at Home Depot in Seekonk, MTTI graduate Thom Smith was named employee of the month.

“I also work as a counter person and maintain their equipment,” he said. “I work on a wide variety of machinery.”

“(MTTI President) Ward (Ring) has come through the store a few times,” Smith said. “He’s always an engaging person. It’s rare that you are directly in contact with the president of a school. He and his wife, (Sharon,) are great people.” He also had high praise for the staff. “It was a good experience all the way around.”

Thom praised the program and the curriculum, but what he really remembers is the camaraderie. "There were just 16 in our class and I made some new friends - really good friends. I’ve been back to the school numerous times, just staying in contact.”
